about

this album has been sitting on my desktop for like 6 months, partially because I lost the titular "4. The Fourth Necessity" magazine clipping featured on the cover until a few days ago, and partially because I couldn't decide if it was finished or not. To me, the songs were done the moment they were magnetized - the whole album was dubbed direct to tape from my shoe rack studio, recorded over about a week in the dead of winter. it's the first full collection of what might come to be known as my "ruggedly analog" period, a term originally muttered derisively by some post-poptimist hack to his compatriots at a mid-2030's societe party, it had taken on an air of sincere praise during the "mechanical revolution," referring of course to the public backlash towards digital technology in the wake of a massively disruptive solar flare (Sleepwalker's more contemporary critics would be quick to mention that much of the album was, in actuality, performed with the aid of digital samplers, and a number of effect boxes as well. What sonic elements are "truly analog" is frequently the subject of debate.)

Sounds here are sourced from the far reaches of history, from records, from raindrops, from fleamarket tape, or, perhaps, performed by my own two hands. The tunes are ordered thoughtfully, with a fresh mix of genres that's guaranteed to catch you off guard a couple times. I hope the music finds you like a cool breeze through an open window.
